What is breast augmentation?

Tailored to Your Unique Goals

Our breast augmentation techniques ensure you get the look you want. Our board-certified plastic surgeons will guide you through your options, helping you enhance your unique aesthetic.

Breast Implant Augmentation

The most well-known breast augmentation method involves the placement of saline or silicone implants to enhance both breast size and shape. Our skilled surgeons utilize the latest techniques to ensure natural-looking results, specifically tailored to your preferences. Breast implants are made in several materials, textures, and profile combinations.

Materials

Silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue.

Saline implants are filled with saline (sterile saltwater). They are inserted into the breast empty and then are filled to the desired volume. Saline implants are typically firmer than silicone implants but have the advantage of requiring a smaller incision for placement.

Form-stable implants (“gummy bear implants”) are composed of a cohesive silicone gel, which has a thicker consistency than traditional silicone implants. They are designed to keep their shape and minimize the risk of rippling or wrinkling over time.

Textures

Smooth implants have a smooth outer shell, allowing them to move freely within the breast pocket. Smooth implants may be preferred for patients who desire a softer, more natural result.

Textured implants have a textured surface that adheres to the surrounding tissue, reducing the risk of implant rotation. They may be recommended for patients undergoing breast reconstruction or those with a history of capsular contracture.

Profiles

Low-profile implants have a wider base and project less from the chest wall, providing a subtler enhancement.

Moderate-profile implants offer a balance between projection and width, providing moderate fullness and cleavage enhancement.

High-profile implants have a narrower base and project more prominently from the chest wall. They offer maximum projection and fullness, creating a rounder appearance, upper pole fullness, and enhanced cleavage.

Your plastic surgeon will help you select the best implant type for your needs, body proportions, and specific aesthetic goals.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

Experience the beauty of natural enhancement with fat-transfer breast augmentation. This technique involves harvesting fat from a donor area of your body, purifying it, and strategically injecting it into the breasts to enhance volume and contours. The results are considered semi-permanent to permanent. This option is attractive for patients who don’t want the maintenance of replacing breast implants at a later time. The transferred fat provides a more modest but natural-looking size increase. Your surgeon will carefully place the injections to sculpt the breast contours you desire.

Impeccable Safety Standards

What is the breast augmentation procedure like?

Our board-certified plastic surgeons have extensive expertise in breast surgery. They incorporate the latest methods to ensure the safest possible procedure and impeccable results.

Surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The duration of the surgery depends on the techniques employed. Incision placement varies depending on individual factors determined during your consultation.

Breast Implant Augmentation

Incisions may be placed in one of the following locations:

Inframammary fold incision (IMF). This is the most common incision location for breast augmentation. The incision is made in the natural crease underneath the breast.

Periareolar incision. The incision is made along the lower border of the areola. The periareolar incision may be used to place saline implants, which are filled with saline after they are in place.

Transaxillary incision. The incision is made in the armpit (axilla). This approach requires the use of an endoscope or specialized instruments to create a tunnel from the armpit to the breast pocket for implant placement. Transaxillary incisions are primarily used for saline implants.

Breast implants may be placed under the breast’s glandular tissue (sub-glandular placement) or under the chest muscle (submuscular placement). Your surgeon will work with you to determine the best implant placement for your procedure.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

The first step of fat transfer is harvesting donor fat from another area of the body. Common donor sites include the abdomen, thighs, or hips. Liposuction is used to artfully sculpt away fat from the donor area, providing the dual benefit of body contouring in this area. The fat is then purified to prepare it for injection.

The surgeon creates very small, strategically placed incisions to inject the purified fat. They will carefully distribute the fat to achieve your ideal breast shape and volume.

Attentive Care at Every Step

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Patients typically return home the same day of the procedure with a friend or family member to drive them. Most people can resume light activities within one or two weeks. Less complex procedures may require slightly less downtime. However, you will need to refrain from strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for four to six weeks to ensure proper healing.

Your surgeon will provide detailed aftercare instructions, including guidance on caring for incisions, managing discomfort, and resuming activities. You will also attend follow-up visits to check your progress. We provide attentive care throughout the recovery process to ensure optimal healing and results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some discomfort, bruising and swelling are common during the initial stages of breast augmentation recovery. Your surgeon will prescribe pain medication and have you limit your activity levels to manage any discomfort. Most patients find that post-procedure soreness diminishes within the first week after surgery.

Breast implants can sometimes make it more challenging to obtain clear mammogram images, as they can obscure some of the breast tissue. However, specialized techniques, such as Eklund displacement views, can be used to promote accurate mammogram results in women with implants. It's essential to inform your mammography technician that you have breast implants so they can take appropriate steps to obtain the best images possible.

Most patients return to light activities within a week or two after surgery. Some patients are feeling good enough to resume working at desk jobs and doing light chores in as little as a week. You will need to avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting and vigorous exercise, for four to six weeks in order to prevent complications. Your surgeon will provide aftercare instructions personalized to your needs and check your recovery progress at post-operative visits.

Silicone breast implants have undergone extensive testing and research and are considered safe for use in breast augmentation and reconstruction surgeries. However, like any medical device, silicone implants carry some risks, such as the possibility of rupture or leakage, capsular contracture, and the need for additional surgeries over time. Your surgeon will carefully evaluate your medical history and risk factors before performing any procedure. They will also educate you about maintaining optimal breast health and how to detect complications.
